“Why Aren’t My Legs Smooth After Waxing?”
This is one of the most common questions I get asked in the Clinic, and I totally get it! You’ve just gone through your waxing session, expecting silky-smooth legs, only to notice a little prickliness or unevenness. So what gives? Let’s break it down. Coming from someone who’s been there (literally since I was 13 when my mum first waxed my legs, thanks Mum!).
It’s All About the Hair Growth Cycle
Here’s the thing, our hair doesn’t all grow at the same time. Hair grows in three main phases Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting). When you’ve been shaving, you’ve got hairs at all different stages of this cycle. Some are just peeking through the skin, some are still underneath, and some are fully grown.
When you come in for a wax, I can only remove the hairs that are visible and long enough to be gripped by the wax (roughly 1 cm). The ones still in earlier stages won’t be affected, meaning they’ll pop through a few days later — giving that “not-quite-smooth” feeling.
The Secret? Consistency!
The key to long-term smoothness is regular waxing appointments, ideally every 4 to 6 weeks. not 4 weeks or 6 weeks either 4 weekly or 6 weekly if you come 4 weeks one session and 7 weeks next treatment this will throw out the hair growth cycle and you will feel it! Over time, waxing helps synchronise your hair growth cycle, meaning all the hairs start growing (and can be removed) at the same time. This leads to smoother results that last longer, with finer, softer regrowth.
If you shave between waxes (we’ve all done it!), it resets that cycle and brings back uneven growth so try to hold off and let the waxing work its magic.
From Experience…
I’ve been waxing for years, both personally and professionally, and I can promise it’s worth sticking with it! The first few waxes can be a little inconsistent, but once your hair growth evens out, you’ll notice the difference.
Waxing isn’t just about hair removal, it’s about training your skin and hair to work with you, not against you.
So next time you notice a few stray hairs after your wax, don’t stress. It’s completely normal! With patience, consistency, and the right aftercare, your legs will be smoother than ever — and you’ll never look back.
Pro tip: exfoliate gently 2–3 times per week and keep your skin hydrated with moisturiser
. it’ll help prevent ingrown hairs and make your next wax even better!
If you imagine shaving hair at the skin level (fun fact yes, three or more hairs can grow from the same follicle) when we shave, we’re cutting the hair at its thickest point. This leaves dark spots at the skin level and, as the hair grows back, it feels thicker. Not because shaving stimulates growth, but simply because we’re cutting it in half at its thickest point.
When we wax, the hair is completely removed, so the fine tip of the hair appears first. This makes regrowth smoother compared to shaving. Unlike shaving, waxing actually removes the hair from the follicle, where the base is fed by the blood supply. Over time, this can cause some damage to the blood supply, slowing down hair growth.
So yes, waxing can improve hair growth! The hair appears thinner, regrowth is softer, and your skin stays smoother for longer.
